Activities at the
Wild Canopy Reserve

Within the Reserve:

Walks: (For the average city dweller). Just amble around taking in the majesty and beauty of nature in all its glory with a local escort. You will most probably see deer, langur, monkeys, Malabar squirrel, and a host of birds.

Treks: (For the more energetic and adventurous). With one guide and one escort, trek 7 kms along the perimeter of the reserve, across rocky streams, hillocks, gullies, bamboo thickets, grass lands and scrub forest. For the less energetic go through 3 kms of coffee plantation, forests and streams.

Safari: (For all). Drive through the reserve in a 4-wheel drive over dirt tracks and natural animal habitat.

To be introduced soon: Machans: (viewing platforms built on trees) For adventurous adults only: Walk through forest and sit on Machans over looking natural water holes frequented by animals

External:

Hiking: Hike up the mountains, with packed lunch and guide. Following the ancient bridle path used by Tippu Sultan.

Sightseeing local places of interest: It is believed that the area was one of the cradles of civilization hence it is littered with megalithic burial sites and hero stones. This was also later the capital of the Wynaad kingdom, hence there are plenty of ruins of old forts and temples in the vicinity. The modern developments of powerhouses and dams can also be seen.

Bokkapuram Mariamman temple Festival: The spring festival celebrated here in February/March of every year is a colorful and fascinating spectacle.

IPAN Animal Refuge: The animal shelter is run by a voluntary organization. This is home to a number of destitute animals, which are well cared for. A must visit for animal lovers.

Mudumalai wild life sanctuary: The sanctuary provides morning an evening rides. Elephant puja can be witnessed at the Teppakadu elephant camp in the evenings. The elephant rejuvenation camp for about 100 elephants, conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu in December/January of every year is an interesting experience.

Bandipur Project tiger reserve & National Park: This is a project tiger reserve, which has the added attraction of Elephant safaris. They also provide the usual bus rides. Open jeep safaris are also available.

Gopalswamy betta: An ancient temple located on the highest point within the Bandipur National Park is good for a daytime picnic. This has an interesting history, which is evident from the ruins that are scattered around the area.

Kallikudar: To be introduced soon as a day trip. This place is on the northeastern slopes adjoining Kotagiri. The place is being developed as the next location.

Ooty-Coonoor circuit: Visit the tourist spots in and around Ooty and Coonoor.

Alternate Nilgiris: The alternate Nilgiris circuit is designed to experience the Nilgiris from a different perspective. Visit scenic locations and quaint little villages and farmsteads, off the beaten track and away from the main thoroughfares. Also interact with rural communities and experience the indigenous tradition, culture, and heritage of the Nilgiris.

Nilgiri Mountain Railways: Go for a trip on the UNESCO heritage mountain steam train, which runs, between Mettupalayam and Ooty.

Recommended : To get the true feel of Wild Canopy Reserve a minimum of a three day stay is essential. It is an ideal place for exclusive family get togethers for up to 15 persons and for special occasions.

Guests are advised to bring

~Bring rain protection (ideally, hands-free) The rainy season is June-Oct.
~Evenings tend to be nippy, sweaters and shawls are recommended
~Comfortable walking shoes
~Any special medication that may be required
~General clothing: avoid whites and bright colours
~Handy torches
~Avoid strong perfumes
